If you could do anything in the world as a job what would it be ??

For my self, I think that I have it, though at times it can be hard work when not much money is coming in, but for the most part I do love what I do...

Ask yourself do you really need something, what you so desperately try to achieve.
You will certainly achieve it, but then achieved it may seem to you not so attractive.
That's the story of my life. I wanted to be the best Biologist researcher. spent most of my life on drak labs until I was brave to quit it all and do only what I really love. Yoga, football pool
and study all kinds of divination.
Practically I don't believe in  Ideal Job, or  Ideal  anything. If you  want too much, you end up
lose it all.

The Beatles (Lennon/McCartney)

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy.
There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be in time
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
All you need is love (all together now)
All you need is love (everybody)
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

Well, I never thought I would say this... and please don't think I'm really sad...... but now my life has changed so much, I'd like to have a go at being a mum.... and I know that that is a full time job in itself......

.... other than that, I dunno, I always wanted to go in the RAF but having had a broken neck stopped me, so my "ideal job" was robbed from me when I was 21.....

.... so as they say.... onwards and upwards

I'd like to be a rockstar, that would be great...
Not because of the money or whatever, but for standing on the stage and to perform my songs... That's a real great feeling!!!

Another dream of me is being an actress, that'd be really cool!!!

Well, actually  I'd be happy with beeing a web designer, if I'll find a good job after my apprenticeship...

You know I love you...

I have allways had an interest in the sea and sealife, so to be a marine biologist would be good.
I would also have to be loaded though so i could finance my own projects, otherwise i would probably end up with a miniscule grant, on a muddy beach studying the reproductive habits of welks!

I think, therefore I usually get it wrong.

Hey Key, you are young, and who knows your dreams may come true. I have been doing work for a young band, and well, it looks like they may now be on the road to stardom

Ahhh.... they are doing like VERY well at the moment... All down to Stew, but I am glad that I have been able to help then along the way...
They did, lets say rather well at a concert this week in London, and things are looking up for them. I hope they make it cos they are really nice, and its been a pleasure working with them up to this stage. But as ever if things do take of for them then I will be back to squre one .. but there is "talk" of them maybe supporting a, a errrrr "popular" well known chart band

Like in the Roman Feast of Saturnalia I'd like to be God for a day ... anybodys God would do - I am not biased one way or the other - imagine all the things you achieve in a day - the issues could resolve, the mysteries you could solve ...

I would finally find out why every time I use the washing machine one of my socks disappears ...

I would love to write and direct music videos. I listen to music and just imagine what I could do with a video for a song! I was watching the Depeche Mode music DVD the other night and I couldn't help but think how dull the majority of their vids are! In my mind, my imagined video for "Never Let Me Down Again" is streets ahead of the DM vid!!

That said, I do enjoy my work as it's almost different.

I don't think the job you do matters - whether it is dustbin 'person' or rocket scientist, member of a pop group or nurse --- so long as you are happy and satified and feel appreciated in whatever you do.

Statistic - 75% of people who were asked in a survey 'would you give up your job/employment if you won a fortune on the National Lottery' answered 'No, they'd prefer to continue to work' .... I wish I was one of them

It's a funny old world isn't it ...

Job ambition? - to ignore the moaners and simply 'be happy'.

i work from home so i suppose i dont have much to complain about, but i have nieces and nephews some days cos they want to play with connor.twice a week now instead of 4 times,i work voluntarily, its only 4 hours a time but it can be very stressful due to heartbreak of families losing loved ones to suicide.

working from home has bad points as well though, you still get callers, friends, family, although they mostly respect the fact that youre busy, but callers to do with the busines takes a lot of time some days.

i like to get the chance to keep going at something im working on,but mostly its back and forth to it.

i was up til 1am just getting the laundry cleared up.

and the phone never stops, but thats a good thing, cos its usually estimates or orders or enquiries.

When I was younger I wnated to be a pathologist, but got talked out of it. I would have found a medical degree difficult. I still take an interest in unusual crimes, etc.

I never even mentioned wanting to be a film director, but I would have had the wrong attributes for that. I'm too bone idle. I like watching films, though.

I ended up a computer-programmer by accident. I don't know whether I truly chose to do it. I don't think I was the greatest programmer on earth. Basically, I hate being put on the spot, having to find the answer to questions when I just don't know the answer - all part of being bone idle, I suppose.

Now, I haven't a clue what I'd like to do - I don't think I've ever known myself - surely most people know themselves? Everyone else I've ever met seemed to.

Feels like I've spent so much time being what other people thought suitable, I've lost what I wanted, and can't find it anymore.

Nothing else to say - didn't mean to go on!

i think everyone loses themselves more that once in their life time omj.
even though we love our kids,i have felt like im existing for everyone else.
i had a time where i knew that if it ME was a plce id been to,i hadnt a hope finding my way back.
i was getting chest pains, pains in my arms, and what i found out to be panic attacks.i thought i was having a heart attack on time and after tests was told it was a stress attack.very scarey.

after asking a lot of questions about my life style, the doctor said i was at risk of more of these because i was trying to be all things to everyone.

i had counselling for a while, but left it cos i knew i had to get harder, less of a doormat.

that was 8 years ago,i still do too much sometimes, but for the sake of my health and my sanity,i say no a lot more often.

You know, well I am just like all of us, and in my heart of heart, I care so much for people and what is going on.
I am lucky, so far, and it can all go wrong at any stage, but I am do-er in other words, not just beer talk, (he says half cut)

But any one, can better themselves, and not just through eduction, help a charity, do a new sport, find a local find a ghost group, ... all of us, with a little motivation, can achieve what we want.

Well, I have been depressed in my life, and hit an all time low, like very low. But I got things fixed, and would never let my self get into the same state again.

You are though what you are, and some people, have drive and energy, while others are happy plodding on, nothing wrong with either person.

i was thinking about this last night neil,(i do need a life),and i remember seeing an interview one time with kirk douglas,(spartagus)..

he said he has worked hard all his life and has fame and fortune, his off-spring have fame and fortune..but now that hes in the twilight of his life, his only regret is that he didnt get to know his kids.

he says that people on their death bed dont say "i wish id worked harder",they say "i wish id spent more time with family and friends".

itd be great to never have to worry about money, but id hate to know i was dying and didnt really do right by my friends and family....puts things into perspective a bit i think.

well said... I make a huge effort with my kids to do just simple things...spending a lot of money on them, does not create lasting memories

is that my husband speaking?.....

i  decided( before this was brought up),that i am going too far down that road to ensuring that my kids want for nothing...

thing is...when they have to face the world and make their own way in it..they will want for a lot...cos theyre used to getting it,and it wont be handed to them..

i knew i wasnt doing them any favours, and that id be sorry when it is put to the test, and so would they...i had a talk with vicki about this, and her reaction was to ask if i was skint...

its not too late...and ive already started..they arent pleased, but they agree that i spent a ridiculous amount of money on them.

but really....ive always been told that theyre good kids..they are mostly, its only that they have been taking a lot for granted..my fault.

friends where we live always treat them like part of their own families...they give their own an ice-cream and call connor for one etc...

one friend sees him as a grandson sort of...he and his wife wont walk their dog without asking connor if he wants to come too..that sort of thing has always happened to connor..

connors best friend is their grand-daughter..

at one time when he was 3 yrs old,he threw a lot of tamtrums and i thought there might be something wrong,so i made an appointment with a child psycologist who needed reports from nursery etc...they couldnt praise him enough,so i was told he was normal...thank god.

the problem isnt with the kids..its with me being too generous.

i met some of them while at school,at that age it made a bigger impact on me than i wish it had...i hated them but to be honest,id have traded places with them in an instant then.

i hated my child hood,i spent years telling myself it was some-one elses past.

i know its why i go too far in many ways now,ie,spending too much on the kids,"not going there" if it  whifs of anything i remember about what happened to me.

it causes arguments sometimes between rob and myself, but he had a good childhood, and doesnt know much cos i havent gotten into the frame of mind where i want to tell him things.
he says sometimes that he knows" somethings up",but i told him that if you "go back" for a while, its there for days, and its not over cos youve stopped talking about itIYKWIM.

years ago,i would see a therapist, but found that it worked better if i didnt "relive" all the c--p,i wouldnt get away from it by doing that,so what ive done all these years, has been easier to do.

i know youll think its not put to bed then, just put aside, but i dont want to be doing things differently, not after all this time.

anyway, theres more important stuff i have to use my energy on,but its 4.40am,and i need another coffee.

Right now,any job that pays what I need it to pay, will do me.....the one I`ve got is`nt really cutting it.

Now that I don`t work with my ex husband on OUR WEE COMPANY,and get a very decent wage for doing it,I`m out in the big wide world doing it myself.

But,if I could be anything I wanted to be,I`d be Donald Trump.

Well, I am very lucky that I had a job I loved for 14 years out of 16 worked. For what it's worth, I did Biological research and just love messing about in labs. The last five years I have been subsumed into motherhood, which has been the best job in the world and one I wouldn't have missed for anything. For the future?

I know what I always wanted to do, which never happened for various reasons.... I really wanted to get into Car design, but the years of education and Levels needed, and chances are would have resulted in me designing cartons for orange juice or something. The risk wasn't worth it in the end.... but thats the past.

I was a graphic Designer for years though (if you can call it that using a 486....) and I designed things like logos for mats. If you ever go into Halifax or Royal bank of scotland you'll see some of my work.... Thats the end of my design carrer as I have to say I never really got anything from it in the end...

For now though I'm happy in what I'm doing, and would like to be a full time proper Network Admin in the future, having learned a lot more hopefully between now and then. The power you have is amazing.... for now, I'm close...

I am all the things I regret

You should go for it.. Don't let your fears, stand in the way of your dreams.

I am a little unclear, on what I will do.. Been doing photographic since I was 16, now aged 44 and a bit.... time for a new direction

hmm - maybe when I'm older; when my daughter is older!
Maybe you need a little time to relax before thinking about next steps? I'm sure something will turn up.
Pity you can't get paid for being a hippy!

Well, I wanted to be a Cllr and spent 9 months of my life working on it. I started canvassing in February. One night it was so cold, that I only manged 20 minutes, and when I made my way back to the car, my hands were that cold I could not not move them. I was ill for 3 weeks after it, but still went out everynight that I could. Could be lucky that I got elected at my first attempt, or it could have been down to the sheer hard work, who know. But I go back to the poster I have here "Dont Let Your Fears, Stand In The Way Of Your Dreams"

In a short time, I am going to make some major changes to my life, will not go into too much detail yet, but what I am going to do, will be one of the biggest changes to my life for many, many years.
Will it work out? well who knows, but I am a person that does things, and does not talk, so we will wait and see.

No elpatt, I'd be bored senseless after a while.

After all, you can only go round the world so many times; and if you won millions on the lottery, you risk that family/friends etc turn against you. You become a target for people begging - and worse (remember that poor Irish lady who got death threats)....

No, if I won the lottery, I'd like something like five hundred grand to buy a really nice house outright and not have to worry about bills anymore, but I'd still carry on working, even if it was only part time....

There are a lot of people working part-time when they don`t need to....I don`t see anything wrong in that either.....I know a couple of pensioners who do it for the company.

Why should we? If I won loads of money, I would give some to my family and closest friends; but certainly not to people "begging" claiming they 'really need it'.

I'd also give shed loads to Papworth Hospital and Cancer Research, British Heart Foundation, Stroke Association and the Breast Cancer charity (who's name escapes me right now.....)

Elpatt .... that's true - but you can only fully appreciate that when you work/have worked yourself, don't you agree??

I would have liked to study archaeology or architecture, but I decided that I wanted to earn money from the first day from out of school to have my own money.
I applied in several travel agencies, but only received negative answers.
So I "ended up" as a civil servant, which is not exactly what I dreamt of, but at least my working hours are not too bad.

just a bit like me ... at first i wanted to be translator. but the school for it was to expensive for me and like you i wanted to earn some money after the school. then i thought to work in a travel agency would be great. but everybody replied they don´t take apprentice that year. so i ended up as an office clerk.

and now i organise seminares/workshops for hospital staff (administration/management/doctors).

i will be applying for my old job as a delivery driver again soon. Once my son is in full time school I can have the flexibility with hours, which I didn't have last time around.

May your plans come true! Fingers crossed! And great success to your son at school, of course!

For me the ideal job means- my body and my mind are in the permanent movement, i can do very different things (from teaching Maths till painting desks, for example), and practically never anything repeats.
What i really hate- if the boss makes me do things, i'm not sure, i'm able to do well.

BTW- i've got the ideal job!

My job just gets better. Got the extra funding, and now taking on someone who has been volunteeing for months. Nice.
More work for me, but more rewards. Not much chance of more money but ne'ermind.

This is absolutely true. I really don't know how Neil ever found time to date me those first few months.

Never came across anyone before that worked so hard, even from when I used to work in research, which is another high-stress occupation...

On a lighter note, my "ideal job", now that I'm married is "Muppet Impersonator"!!

Nige.... Best of luck, I know how hard it is to juggle job and kids, and thats without all the other stuff.

Corky... Sounds like things have moved to a new level, well done.

Neil... We`ve seen you go through major major changes, and if there`s 1 thing Ive noticed, it`s that you are happier than ever, that is what matters most.

Sandra... Where did you see that advertised? are there anymore jobs like that? I want one Lol.

Amber... It`s great when you love your job, I loved it when I wanted to go to work.

True words - the very reason I left my job of 11 years in '98... it had started to affect my health.

Fingers crossed for Friday, eh?

I need a new job. Since 2nd July, they have made changes here which are for the worse... for the customers as well as us. Yesterday - to make the situation that little bit better - they kicked us when we were down saying they are reducing the annual leave situation, "looking at" flexi and generally piling crap on us until we were fully covered.

I may well be going in October if all goes to plan, a colleague who is on maternity leave who worked in another role (which has now gone) wants to buy down to the grade that I am at. This could allow me to be "bumped" out of the company with a redundancy package - and the last month has made that decision much easier to be made.

There is alot of red tape though, and quotes to be gotten; so nothing is set in stone - it's just an explorable avenue and I am even looking into employment agencies to see if I can get something through them...

It may mean, if it happens, that I disappear from these forums for some time until we can get sorted with the new house and internet at home - but I'm hopeful if Neil is being very, very nice; he might allow my account to remain until we get sorted......

I have, sadly, reached the point though, where I now have to make a change - to keep my health on a level plane, and my sanity intact......

Fingers crossed Maxine that it all works out for the best. At least if you can leave with some redundancy, that'll give you a little breather while you look for an alternative.

Sounds as though you have a few weeks with us yet before a temporary absence, so we'd better make the most of them, eh?

Exactly, and after the service I've given (not to mention the unpaid hours) it's the least I can hope for....

I have a job interview as a "Handyperson" on Friday Morning (Hooray at last !)

The hours are Ideal 25+,  on just above minimum wage. The job is also flexible with the start time, so I can work the same hours as my son is at school without the need for a childminder (except for school holidays).

Nigel ?  Oh yeah, he's up there !

@ Sandra. Believe and think, you'll get the better job soon, and it'll happen! Also try to find positive things at this job. When i worked as a charwoman, i used to think, "This job helps to be in a good shape. " This thought helped to improve my mood, i even started to love that job.

@ Nigel. Waiting really weighs down...
But everything'll be OK! You WILL GET that job!!!

Sandra, so long as you're happy while you're at work it doesn't matter what job you do.. it's when work becomes a miserable place when it's not so good; and, like you said, the cash will be useful!!!

Nigel,
So frustrating when that sort of thing happens. The day Neil was supposed to go for his interview, he got a letter saying that after careful consideration he had not been successful this time.

He phoned up and the letter had been sent in error. He did get the job.

Hope you still get yours, Nigel - fingers and toes crossed!

Just got back from my interview. It was very informal and laid back. I think all went well and hope to find out in the next few days whether I got the job or not. They are hoping to start the new staff member on 20th August (only 7 days away) so not much time to arrange childcare.

Nigel ?  Oh yeah, he's up there !

Any word, Nigel?  Maybe you should optimistically start looking into child care now.

Funny you should mention that, got all the childcare addresses, prices and times etc in front of me. Sadly still no work, but expect to hear something tomorrow if successful, which is very short notice to start on Monday.

Me and the other half are setting up a new business at the moment - estate agency/letting.  A lot of work so far and more to come. Will continue with what I'm doing, but also will be doing stuff for the co as well - burning the candle at both ends.  The good thing about it is that any money we make goes to us (plus our partner) and not into someone else's pocket

Good luck in your new venture Steph. I hope it all works out well for you.

I phoned the business that I had the interview with on Monday, it seems I was given the wrong date for them taking on a new employee, it is 27th NOT 20th as they have another interview to conduct on Tuesday. So there is still hope.

I have another interview on Tuesday morning as a Sandwich delivery driver. I also handed in 2 more job applications this morning. I will also be receiving another application form in the post on Monday.

Its bloody hard trying to get back into work, especially if I want to spend a few hours quality time with my son each day.

Nigel ?  Oh yeah, he's up there !

Nigel, good luck with the job hunting. I know it can be hard going, but sure you will get there.

I haven't heard frm the lady I started cleaning for, but then come Sept I'll have plenty on anyway, so not too worried.

We did find out today that scrap aluminium pays a good price though....

Well I've applied for 9 jobs in the last 3 weeks and so far only heard from 1, and I didn't get that job. (wasn't a job a really wanted anyway but it was one I could do). I don't ever remember having this much trouble getting a job before. I'm starting to wonder whether being a single parent has anything to do with it, knowing that I will need time off if my son is ill.(though I do not tell them that)

Very annoying that. I applied for 18 jobs in a month once, did`nt get word back from all, but got 7 interviews... got 1 job out of it.
A lot of places, tho they have to advertise, recruit from within their own staff.... total waste of applicants time and effort. But, keep your chin up Nige.... and dont give up. In the scheme of things, it has`nt really been very long.

That's a tough one, Nigel. The way things are going, more and more places expect people to re-train before taking them on...

If you don't have bits of paper then you will need a very well-directed application that shows you meet all the "Criteria". I think it's wrong that so many organisations are relucatant to train from scratch, but that's how it's going. I wouldn't stress too much about your responsibilites to your son. Any company worth working for will be OK with this, plus you have a legal right to about 13 days off as a parent with an under 5. Maybe try and go through any applications with a fine tooth comb and make sure that you are showing that you are meeting what the advert is asking for, especially if you are given a "person specification". Also worth getting someone independent to look over it for you. and don't give up - something will turn up.

Once your son starts school I would think about some volunteering or training, even if you can't get paid work? That's how I started and it helped me feel better about myself, plus the volunteering/training that I did helped me get my current job. My current boss was on the same Parent Survival Course that I did.

OK.. get this for being true.. If you employ staff, it seems that something like 60% are now not qualified to work for you, and they need to be re trained... by a government training scheme. And this is 100% true... Boy am I glad I have got out of employing staff....

Will you be getting paid to attend the training?  Might make it sort of tolerable. . .

My ideal job is not doing what I am doing at the moment...

.... but I woke up very early this morning and thought I would see what's going where I used to work before I had my little 'un and now I am jumping for joy because there is a job going in my old department in a fab group where I know I'd get on well and I'm already known!!! Yippeeee!!!!!

OK, I know I haven't got the job yet, but at least there is hope
It would solve so many probs if I got that one! It's something I enjoy, that I'm good at, that pays real money, and that doesn't require any of the nonsense outlined above.

Thanks to Lego Man, Elfi, Dreamredux and Maxine. Your good wishes much appreciated!

I used to be a good researcher but have been primarily a Mum for 7 years now. I'm really keen to get back to lab work again now. Very excited!

I don't mind if it's not this job I get, but I would like an end to this sort of shinnanigins:
Arrived today at work on one site, on time at 9.15am, straight from school. Co-worker arrives with a message - I am needed elsewhere as I have Bongo taxi. Back to the office to collect another co-worker and the bits we need, over to another centre 7 miles away. By now we are late. Suitable room being used by another group, so dangerous and unsuitable room has to be made safe and welcoming asap. On route my co-worker had told me that this session runs 2 hours longer than my original one. This means no dinner and 15 minute break to buy and eat some food, then as we were late setting up the kids were collected late by the parents. Bongo taxi then needed to take co-worker and paperwork back to office. Traffic bad now so this takes longer. Back at the office my timesheet has been completely re-sceduled again after 1 week and 3 changes during this week. I'm so late I haven't time to note all these changes. Home at last by 3.40pm instead of 12.30pm.

This sounds exactly like where I work, which has gone very downhill, very quickly, since the introduction of a new 'senior' manager on 02 July. This is the reason I am now actively looking for another job, and trying for VR, rather than thinking about it.

Can fully empathise Sandra, if you want to chat about it privately, feel free to email me (I'll PM my email address to you in case you don't have it)

On another web site that I run, I set up a directory, with paid links for "suppliers" and got a 100.00 advert... Did not think any one would pay to advertise..

Last year a company got in touch to see if they could advertise, so I said yes.. and then as a joke, said but it will cost you 500.00 ... mnnn they took me up and paid

Still no luck on the job front. Had an interview at the job centre this morning and was informed of 3 courses I can do towards NVQ2. Business and admin, Customer services and Teaching assistant. So Ive gone for the Teaching assistant course. Have an interview on 7th Dec.

Good luck with getting the job Elfi.

Well, as you know Sandra has her new job to look forward to I got a call tonight, and may take up the offer to work as a cellar man just 3/4 hours each morning, but will help me get back into a bit of a routine and the extra cash will be nice.

Also, and this maybe of intrest to some of you looking to earn a few extra I am also going for work doing mystery shopping   money is OK, but you get free food and stuff thrown in I will see how it goes then post up more details on how to find the work if any one is intrested?

Never been a mystery shopper's wife before! lol
Funny enough being a councillor's wife...
Not to mention a Cellar-man's wife, and not least System Administrator's wife.

Onwards and upwards...
