I think that the period that I would have liked to have come from would have been the Millennium, and am really happy that I was there.. Just to reflect on how far we have come, and to think about, thoughts as a 8 year old, and how those have happened.
Maybe, given an option, I would like to go back to a period where we had no money.. Those that worked, got work done back, but those that were lazy, got nothing... But all of the time to look after our elders, and those with problems....
What was the best period you would have had?

You pinched my lines again Maxine. !!!

Also, it was a period in time where you felt safe in your own home, bobbies on the beat, and if any youths got "out of order" you could give them a clip round the ear without being "sent down" for it.

The music was great too, I would probably have been a Mod.

Nigel ?  Oh yeah, he's up there !

Don`t know about going back to the 60`s.... I was only born then, but all that marijuana etc, they say that if you remember the 60`s...then you were`nt there.

I`d want to go to the period when there were Pirates.... only if Jonny Depp was there tho.

Failing that.... I`d choose the 80`s... and grasp all the chances I had to make a good life elsewhere.

I think, to some extent I am happy that I lived and took part in the "revolution" that took place late 70's early 80's bye bye to d.i.s.c.o and the arrival and wake up call of Punk.. then to watch this turn around and enter the synth age, maybe some of my best times were had from 1978 - 1985

I wish I could have lived during the 80's. Maybe with my today's knowledge of technology and computers, I could dominate the whole entire PC and tech industry if I could go back to the 80's.

I think I would like to have been an Ancient Greek - would love to have been around listening to Socrates, and seeing Athenian democracy in action - if only I'd been a man!

I've always been facinated by Mary Wollstonecraft, form the late 1700s (I think). Anyway she was the mother of Mary Shelley of Frankinstein fame, and had an amazing life, including witnessing the French revolution, travelling around Scandanavia and was just an amazingly strong woman until she died a few days after giving birth to her second daughter, Mary. I would love to be a fly on the wall through those times. I think it would make me appreciate how easy we have things these days.

I so agree with you. I grew up listening to my elder brothers playing evrything from glam rock to disco, beatles to tangerine dream and t rex. my aunts & uncles with collections from 50's & 60's, all played at family parties. Then me Punk to New wave.

i'd like to visit numerous periods through history but mostly the time when 'the new world' (n. america) was being explored

You certainly are, you poor thing.

I don`t have many early memories, but I remember my grandad, mum`s dad, his generation and my dad, were grafters. People today have it easier but what have we lost in character etc. They were cut from a different cloth in those days.

BTW, Id like to skip forward a couple of hundred years, to see if there`s really no crime.

Maxine, but yours will be a labour of love..

Elfi, I would also love to see the world in a 100/200 years time, to see if it changes into a better place, my worry of for my children, and their children, to what sort of planet they will live on.

I often wonder if, in 1-200 years time, things will have gone full circle, and those around will be living as our ancestors did at the turn of the last century (ie 1900s)

I don't think it'd harm anyone to live that way - at least there were no benefit scroungers; drugs (to the extent there are today); crime (to the extent there is today) etc etc etc

And ... there was no-one telling you don't eat this cos you'll have high cholestorol (sp?) , don't smoke or you'll be victimised for life, or don't fart in the company of this person etc etc etc

Eeee, them were the days!!!!!!!!!

(Neil - the labour of love is more Cs than mine, it's been his dream for almost all of his life; although now it is becoming a reality - I am getting quite excited!!!!
And I'm certainly not afraid of some real hard work, unlike some of my generation....)

thats where our ancestors lived before they poisoned the planet. Lucky for us our planet Mars survived.

djpamm... I completely agree with you there! I may be 35 now, but I missed out on seeing so many great bands in the 80s because I was just that bit too young! Sometimes I really do wish I'd been born about 10 years earlier, then I could've been old enough to have been there. Still, I've been doing a bit of catching up since 2004! I reckoned on Saturday that I'm just left with Human League and Tears for Fears (if they're still together) to see to make things pretty much complete for me. Oh, and The Police - but I doubt I'll ever get to see them! Not when it's been something like 50 a ticket and travel to London? That's over 70 on the train... then I'd have to arrange somewhere to crash! No chance!   Wouldn't mind seeing ABC either... actually, should've popped down Skegness way first weekend of the month, they had HL, ABC, Go West and Bananarama all there on the Sunday! Dunno what's going on in my neck of the woods, but something very odd is happening!

TFF were good live - only seen them once tho. A group that do put on a good show is someone called OMD. Anyone ever heard of them?

lol.. yeah, I heard a rumour that they're some kind of wierd band who use synthesisers as well as real drums and bass guitar. Apparently they've done some great experimental electronic stuff in the past. Must give them a try sometime!   Wouldn't mind seeing a band like that live

well not really embarassing as such but back in the days of 'mail order' (very 20th century) there used to be record delaers who advertised their wares in NME and such papers , and in particular one week (circa 1983) they had a load of new titles advertised by OMD which I had never heard of !!!! There was me thinking I'd come across a treasure trove of new recordings by McCluskey & co. so I think I wrote to them (by real letter with real stamp!) to order the stuff specifying 'Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark' and they very kindly wrote back saying nope it ain't them it's the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.....good job they were honest and didn't cash my (overdrawn) cheque otherwise I would have had a lot of pretty weird records in my collection !!

Had to resurrect this one, as I discovered (to much hilarity) that the alternative OMD will be on Sky this week (can't remember when, and I'm not by my telly at the mo)... there's a new(ish) channel from Performance called Mainstreet, and it happens to be showing old episodes of 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' on a nightly basis! Which on it's own is worth keeping an eye out for, for those of us too young to have seen the real OMD on there back in the depths of time.

All I could think on Saturday morning as I scanned through and burst into near hysterical laughter was of this thread... and thank god hubby wasn't there to witness the totally irrational response!

If anyone is even vaguely interested Mainstreet is on channel 271 on Sky (don't know if it's on any of the other providers)...

Nothing much to keep uop with, unfortunately. Seem's they only have about 8 programmes, which they keep repeating  > the only one worth watching IMHO is the Blondie one. Still, if they ever do get any others I'll let y'all know.

A snowy white Victorian Christmas for me, the sort you see on the front of the Christmas cards. The times when the spirit of Christmas wasn't commercialism.

Maxine there is a National Trust place near here called Styal Mill (built in the 1800s) and they do an Xmas theme afternoon there, where you get to hear "The Night Before Christmas" by an open fire in one of the cottages, stir the Xmas pudding mix in the kitchen and drink some hot punch. Very atmospheric!
