Scenario:  I need a root canal.  The dentist filled a large, deep cavity yesterday, and I have an appointment next Tuesday to start on the wonderfully thrilling procedure (smell the sarcasm).

He gave me a prescription for amoxicillin ďjust in caseĒ I get an infection between now and next Tuesday.

Question:  Should I take it, ďjust in caseĒ?  Or should I wait until I experience pain?

My dentist was rather waffly with the ďitís up to youĒ response.

(Side note:  Iím going on a trip from Friday and returning Monday, which means traveling ďstress,Ē even though itís meant to be a fun trip.)

I only hesitate to take them if I really donít need to because of the side effects sometimes associated with antibiotics (i.e. destruction of ďfriendlyĒ flora and accompanying unpleasant symptoms).

My father would take asprin before he went work "in case he had a headache". He wouldn't understand it didn't work like that.

IMO if it was necessary to take the tablets before pain started, the dentist would have made it clear. It sounds as though you'd be OK to wait until you need to take them. (I doubt the friendly fauna will object if it's only once in a while)

When I got antibiotics from the dentist, I was told it was important to avoid alcohol with them.

When I got antibiotics from the dentist, I was told it was important to avoid alcohol with them.

Avoiding alcohol won't be a problem - I'm intolerant anyway.  I skip happy and go straight to hangover!

Since the appointment is only next week, I think I'm going to try to avoid taking 'em.  I'm afraid that I'd have to take the whole course (a 9-day supply).

This will be my first-ever root canal!

Well I survived the first appointment for my root canal.  The first of several, because my dentist didn't have time to clean out all three canals.  I'll need to go back several more times for him to clean out the last canal and fit the tooth for a crown.

I had almost no symptoms that anything was wrong with this tooth, but I did miss some cleanings.  If I had been regular, the dentist would have noticed the problem much sooner and filled it while it was still "only" a cavity.

NEVER MISS A CLEANING.  NEVER NEVER NEVER.

Thanks everybody.

Surprisingly, the most unpleasant part was the sound.  My presence here tells you I like pleasant noises - and the sound of metal filing against bone right under my ear isn't one of them!

I'm going to take some OMD and Onetwo and make the dentist play it for me next time.  Maybe that will help!

I'm really religious about visiting the dentist - I hate going but I know that if I don't go for regular check ups then things will get missed and the outcome will be twice as worse.  Can't remember what the phrase is, "prevention is the best cure".

Best of luck btw!

"The hard part's done," according to my dentist.  One more visit to seal everything up.

Strange thing though, before we started I had the assistant pop Instead into the 5-CD changer.

"Can I listen to my CD Instead?"

"OK."  The conversation wasn't as fun as it could have been.

When the dentist came in he said, "What's this?" and popped out the tray.  I explained what it was, and when he pushed the tray back in, Instead wouldn't play.  Not at all.  He flipped back to it a couple of times, but nothing doing.  So for the whole 1+ hour procedure, instead of the dulcid tones of Claudia Brucken, I was treated to a genre I can only described as A Lot of Wailing in Spanish.  Something a dentist would like, I guess.

Once the procedure was over, the assistant came back in and said, "What happened to your CD?"  She opened the tray and closed it again, and it started playing.

I guess Onetwo doesn't like the dentist very much!

I consoled myself by playing it in my car.
