Radiohead's creative marketing venture, which is apparently netting them a tidy profit, got me thinking.

How much would you pay? And what factors would you base it on?

Here's your chance:  Set your price for the new OMD album.

Its one of only two groups that I would pay whatever the price was. Spent large amounts at record fairs for rare OMD.

Not going to vote on this.. The music industry has changed so much, in a very short period of time. And to compare to how much you would pay and to do a vote on it, is nah on impossible to do.

When the whole Radiohead thing came up, I could picture myself sitting in front of the screen scratching my head and thinking, "Hmmmmm....how much would it be worth to me for an artist I really, really like?"

There are a lot of things to consider, like, how much is actually going go the artist (which with the current big-label model is practically nil), what the music industry would be like (even as you said), and (if I got to preview the music in any way) whether I think I would like it.

In the end, I'd probably just go with however much I would normally expect to pay for an album, with the thinking that, well, I already buy music "sight-unseen" for musicians whose artistic vision I fully trust.

Dream, I had pretty much the same thoughts as you at the time of the Radiohead thing. I'm used to shopping around online, and to be fair I generally don't pay much more than about £8, unless I really, really want the album or it has extra stuff like a DVD. I guess that's partly because I'm so used to the bargains you can get, and also I can get an album on iTunes for about £8 - although I do prefer to hold a real album (perferably vinyl!) in my hands and have the artwork etc. For a band I really like I'd go to about £15 - probably.

It's interesting you mentioning about 'how much goes to the band' and the big corps taking all the money. Thing is it's been the same with a lot of the labels for such a long time. EMI were total sh*ts in the '80s (hence my comments in the 'Just cos I love it' thread about Duran Duran and EMI). So it's nothing new - doesn't mean we shouldn't all be up in arms about it, but it's not a new problem. That's why sometimes if I can I'd rather buy direct from the artist's own site - for example Onetwo - instead of through a retailer. OK, I paid more, but I felt (rightly or wrongly!) more like the money's going to the right people. The issue about where all the money from sales goes to is also why touring is so important to bands now - the merchandise is, aparently, where most bands make their money. Mad, isn't it?

I went for the 8 or more vote, simply because CD's cost more than that anyway, and that's what i would expect to pay.
