What is Sinterklaas?

Sinterklaas,is just for children. In November he and his black pieten will come to holland with the steamboat and lots of children said welcome at him.He also ride through a city with a wite horse(called americo)
At 5 december we cellebrate his birthday.

But what I'm telling you all,not all the people know this.

fact 1 Sinterklaas does not come from spain.
where does come from?
In 270 he was born in  in turkey(at that time turkey was just catholic)
He became a bishop of Myra. and give the poor(yes the poor people,çause he was rich) money.and there are some several stories about him.6 december it was not his birth date, but the date he died.

But what about spain.Itallian people who had praise him, bring his bones to Bari in Itali
In that time Bari was in spanish hands.

Here in the Netherlands we celebrate it since the 13th century. So the children get a lot's of sweets and presents.
But at age of 6/7 the most of the children didn't believe in him, because sometimes they will be recognising somebody, who'd been sinterklaas.

Thank you for telling us

We have 'Immaculate Conception' on 8th Dec which sort of gets the ball rolling (and the decorations up). Some areas do Santa Lucia on the 13th too where presents are given..but we don't 'do' her here.
San Nicola of Bari is on 6th Dec which sort of ties in nicely with the Sinterklass thing.

And 5 days til I put my decs up   I was going to do it this weekend, but I prefer to hang the decs when hubby's at work... and as the only night I'm free is Sunday and he's off it'll be Monday! Good thing is that he's at work til 2am all next week and the week after... so plenty of time from when I get home at 6 Just in case the ceiling garlands misbehave like they do every year!

Poor bloke doesn't know what's hit him when he comes home... although he's glad to be out of it, to be honest!
