I've put this in here, because although it's not a problem as such, I'm looking for some advice on what (god forbid) could be....

You've all met our lovely old adopted 'Mr Pussycat' on here, and the poor little man is not well. We think that he has a cold. He keeps sneezing, which at first was very "cute" but now is just plain worrying, and his eyes keep watering/seeping; he isn't eating much and he is spending more time than usual asleep...

This has gone on now for maybe three days; and what I'd like to know is this... should we just get him to the vets; because he really isn't himself; or should we wait and see, as with "human" colds, if it disappears within a week??

I was up eight or nine times the night before last, just to check the poor little soul was breathing; so, needless to say I am very worried about him...

Any of you cat owners who can offer advice would be very much appreciated...

Take him to the vets as soon as... He could have cat flu, which needs to be treated asap...

I have to agree with Neil here. Cat flu can turn very nasty and they need treatment. Cats do not generally get colds like we do...

Awww, poor kitty, I agree with Neil and Sandra. If its financially doable, get the little guy checked out. He's probably miserable.

Cats can get colds just like humans, but I would get him checked out just in case.  Also, it will give the vet a chance to check him over as well just to make sure that everything else is in order.  Unlike us humans we can say when something isn't right, until something happens we don't know whether our beloved pets are suffering with something.

Thanks Neil, Sandra, Debbie and Steph.

We took him to the vet this morning, and the poor old boy has:-

  • Conjunctivitis
  • A cold
  • Sinusitis
    and
  • An ear infection

(I didn't realise cats could gave conjunctivitis and sinusitis)

He's now on antibiotics; and we have got to put cream in his eyes twice a day   Still, at least this should sort him out.... he's gotta go back on Friday.

I've taken some photos of him today; if you look round his eyes and nose you can see where he is poorliest.....

Anyway, again for the advice, I'll keep you posted later in the week....

I know, it breaks my heart. Even looking at the photo of him in the top pic, he kinda looks "happy" but on the latest ones he looks really unhappy, poor little lad...

You can tell by the pictures he doesn't feel too good. I didn't realize cats could get all those illnesses like we do. He looks how I felt all week.
Not to take away from your poor sick kitty, but I have a problem similar. I have been very ill all week with bad bronchitis, non-stop coughing. But no matter how much I cough, nothing is brought up. It's all stuck in my throat and chest, which makes it hard to breathe. I literally have to gasp for air at times. Which is making me wonder...could it be pneumonia?   I am very scared to find out, and don't have money now to see a doctor, but I don't want to drop dead either. I was just wondering if anyone here ever had pneumonia, or know someone who did, and could tell me some symptoms. Thanks.

Debbie - I've never had pneumonia, but with those symptoms, you'd better get to the vet doctors quickly!!!

......Seriously though, I would do, it doesn't sound good... so please go, and keep us updated how you are

Lorraine, , he seems a little better today, but he's only had 4 anti-biotics so far; and 3 doses of eye cream; so it's early days....

One of my nieces had pneumonia last year, she was only 15... and was hospitalised. You cant take your time with it debbie.... you should get it checked to be sure. Great if it isnt.... but if it is... you`ll have done the right thing. Hope all goes well.

Hope mr pussycat is more comfortable Maxine.... I know its early days, and its scary and heart breaking for you.

But Pneumonia is very serious, don't leave it, it will leave you prone to bronchial problems and infection.

Having said that, Pneumonia makes you very ill, and you would definitely know about it. But get it looked at, just in case. Don't play a bad hand with your health as the stakes. >

Thanks Maxine, Elfi, Neil and Corky for your concern. Much appreciated.
Istill feel bad, its been a week now. I am not feverish or achy, my main thing is my chest. It feels like theres an elephant sitting on it. Its hard to breathe, especially if I climb stairs or walk out in the cold. Very hard for me to catch my breath.
And as Elfi said, I don't want to wind up in the hospital. But as Neil said, US sucks with health care. I don't want to waste time or money if its just bronchitis. My next day off is Wednesday, if I'm still like this, I will go get it checked. Thanks guys for your advice.

Well, if you have an HMO or something, chances are you wouldn't be able to get in for an appointment for at least a week.  Maybe you could schedule an appointment now, and if you feel better before the appointment, cancel it.  If not, you would probably be better off going.

Hope you feel better soon.

Corky, it's just horrible. Everyone should have health coverage. Hope it don't come to that. Doctors and medicine nowadays are just too darn expensive.

Over my dead body... I would go to prison, to fight for the UK NHS. But the UK NHS should not be open to abuse, which it is now...

He is improving Ellen, thanks for asking.... he's eating better, and his eyes are only weeping a bit. He's being really good with his tablets and eye cream; and as a consequence is getting even more fuss than usual!

Maxine, glad Mr Puss is on the mend.

Debbie, hope you feel better soon, but if you don't I also think you better get checked over. If it's gone on more than a couple of weeks, most likely it's bacterial and not viral and would need treating...

Yes, cat does look a lot better, he doesn't have that sadness in his eyes like before.

I, too, am finally getting better, thanks Sandra  . I can breathe!! Still coughing some, but at least its coming out...gross, I know. I was scared there a while. I don't like doctors or hospitals.  >

He really IS getting back to his old self now. Night before last we had tinned mandarins with cream. I was merrily eating mine, when a little paw appeared in my bowl... and seconds later, this happened   ------->

The poor li'l old boy!

Just think - we can blow our noses when we have a cold. A bit hard for a cat.

Still, glad he's on the mend!
