Eugh... I hate, hate, hate IE!! As a web developer I just wish that once, just once, MS would build a browser that is actually properly standards compliant... I mean, just how many browsers am I supposed to test sites on??? Thankfully IE5 has now been throughly consigned to the bin, but I'm still having to contend with tweaks and hacks for making the CSS work properly on IE 6, IE 7's not exactly great, and IE 8 - from what I've seen - seems to be all over the place too! First site I tested looked fine, til I realised IE 8 was running in IE7 emulation... And of course there's Firefox, Safari, Opera and Google Chrome (which I really dislike, it's far too minimalist for me!)

Now that I'm back online my computer keeps bugging me to install IE8, that's going to happen over my dead body on this machine (using my backup machine for a while - an old P3 with naff all RAM so it's way to slow as it is! Personally I still find that Firefox is the best browser - and at least that works the same on Macs and PCs! Something else I'm having to contend with more now, as the company I now work for only uses Macs... although.... I have to confess that after 8 weeks I'm now a fully fledged Mac convert! Next spare £2.5k I have is being spent on a Mac Pro with Cinema screen... no more reliance on shoddy Microsnot packages... can't wait! Although, of course, I'll have to!

Had a Mac, and well, as much as I tried to love it, we did not Bond... Am also a web developer, and its a fact of life that MSIE is still the most popular browser, so its a must must to use it and see what things are like... I dont have any major issues with it?

I never thought I'd bond with a mac, but I'm really loving the one at work! For one thing it's so much more stable!! The biggest problem I have when I get home is remembering to use CTRL+ any key rather than CMD, which is just where the ALT key is on a PC... and remembering to relocate the @ symbol!!

I know what you mean about Internet Explorer being so popular that we've just got to live with it, I just get a bit peeved every so often when the design I'm given to build is so easy to do for Firefox and Safari, but can be so different on Internet Explorer - and so different between versions too! I'm probably just developing a massive anti-Microsoft chip on my shoulder though, and I'm going to have to bite the bullet and update sometime soon... in fairness 8 hasn't been as bad as 6 from a developer pov... interestingly the overall market share seems to be in favour of Firefox now, with IE6 & 7 & 8 combined coming in 2nd. BTW, have you tried the Browser Sandbox? It saves having to try and install multiple versions of IE (believe me, the mutli-IE prog you can get doesn't always work correctly!) and throws in 3 versions of Firefox, 2 versions of Safari and Opera as well as Chrome...

I have to confess to having had a first today... a site I'm building at the moment tested absolutely fine in IE8... massive list of things to fix for IE6, but nothing new there! So I'm starting to think that maybe MS have finally gone and produced a pretty well standard's compliant browser it even looks like they've fixed those annoying box model problems Perhaps I shall have to eat humble pie...

Sandboxing is available in FF too And fromWindows 7, you can start to use virtual WinXP free within tin7 virtual environment as a free add-on. Your Processor must have Virtualisation nabled for it to work though, otherwise you'll have to resort to software virtualisation and pay for the additional XP Licence. That will be ideal.

(I must add I've been using Win7 via Technet for months now (and Office 10 ), and would recommend it totally above Vista, and even XP)

No problems with IE, But since starting this post I have stayed with FF. And at work we have ensured FF is installed throughout.

However, Despite all the funding and grants we've identified and won to enhance the work machines though, we have not yet ventured into Mac.

I have to use 2 Macs at work and needs must, but I do not enjoy the experience, nor the frustration that what I need the Macs for cannot easily be re-created on my PC. A pain, as the software I had been running on my PC is no longer free, so I need  work-around... All very annoying, as is Safari, as is having to keep 2 very different systems in my head along with all the other crap I have to remember....

IE8 works fine for me

Onwards and upwards...
