Video for the Johnny Average Band's song Public Image (1980). Shane writes in his biography:

Quoted Text
A new group of English guys had just arrived in Woodstock. One was named Mick Hodgkinson who was putting together a 1950s-type rock and roll band called Johnny Average and the Falcons. . . . . One of the quirks of being a Falcon was that everyone had to assume an alter ego. . . . Initially, Mick Barakan became Shane Mundane. "I felt Mundane was too mundane," he says laughing, "so I switched it to Fontayne. I was in about four or five bands at the time and also doing quite a bit of recording at Bearsville Studios. And from that point on, I became known as Shane Fontayne," he explains.

So, without further ado,

For the second time, Shane has been invited to play at The Kennedy Center Honors.   The show will be taped on December 7, 2008.

As it has for the past three decades, the Honors will air on the CBS network on December 30, 2008 at 9:00pm PST/EST as a two-hour special.

This year’s honorees are  Morgan Freeman, George Jones, Barbra Streisand, Twyla Tharp, and Pete Townshend & Roger Daltrey.

About The Kennedy Center Honors:

Quoted Text
The Honors recipients recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts— whether in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures or television—are selected by the Center's Board of Trustees. The primary criterion in the selection process is excellence. The Honors are not designated by art form or category of artistic achievement; the selection process, over the years, has produced balance among the various arts and artistic disciplines.

Past Honors recipients, as well as Members of the Kennedy Center's national artists committee, made recommendations of possible 2008 Honorees. Artists making recommendations included: Alan Alda, Dan Aykroyd, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Glenn Close, Joel Coen, Christine Ebersole, Renée Fleming, Savion Glover, Thomas Hampson, Herbie Hancock, Paloma Herrera, Hugh Jackman, Billy Joel, Evgeny Kissin, Patti LuPone, Rob Marshall, Reba McEntire, Terrence McNally, Mark Morris, Mark O'Connor, Bernadette Peters, Frederica von Stade, Forest Whitaker, Damian Woetzel, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Previous Kennedy Center Honorees, including Carol Burnett, Clint Eastwood, Elton John, James Levine, and Sidney Poitier, also made nominations.

Michael M. Kaiser, President of the Center, expressed the national cultural center's gratitude to the many individuals involved in the success of the Honors program. "In addition to recognizing our most treasured artists, the Kennedy Center Honors also supports many of our performing arts initiatives, education and public service programming, and national outreach efforts."

^ Oops!  Correction:  Shane has NOT participated in the Honors before.  He's worked with the musical director before, Rob Mathes, but that was for a different event:  2003 MusiCares honoring Bono.

Kennedy Center Honors 2008 - Great broadcast - if a little too heavily edited!  According to Shane's newsletter, Bettye LaVette had to beg the editors to leave in Shane's solo, and she appears to have been successful.  Here is Bettye's fine rendition of Love Reign O'er Me:

Dave Grohl and Joss Stone on Who Are You and My Generation (respectively).  Shane did a Townshend-style windmill just as Dave Grohl did a leap - they should have shown them both!

Rob Thomas - Baba O'Riley
