With WBC the fighting would be about who got the biggest share of the "backhanders" in the past year !

I know, I'm cynical

Hilarity. The world is just one giant Comedy Club.

Look at Gordon Browns super comments on Baby P today for example. I did a child protection course 2 weeks ago with 3 groups given different signs of possible abuse. 50 examples in total shared between them. They were graded in severity and grouped.

Turned out ALL 50 were signs of abuse missed by Haringey SS in the case of Victoria Climbie. Its hard to believe that in this new case, they were actually GIVEN ACTUAL cases of obvious physical abuse several times over and still released the child to its doom.

Its even harder to belive the PMs flippant comments abouut it when asked at Question time.

Prize idiot. Whens that election Neil? Fancy a fight?

This was a terrible case. However, the obvious animonsity between the family courts and Social Services that certainly exists in this area does not help the situation... also the sad truth is that a child does not have a "voice" until (I believe) around 8? What I learned about young children's rights (of lack of them) in the eyes of the law truely appalled me. The law in all seriousness expects a toddler who can barely speak to tell a total stranger of what has happened to them before any action will be taken - no bull... In this sort of climate, I fear for all vulnerable babies and kids.

Onwards and upwards...

Without going into detail (I  can not) but I do a social service visit each month, a variety of different places, and on each visit, I inspect, and do a full and frank report, so far, I have never had a problem, but the one thing into the non too distant future, is going to the abuse (if that is the word) for our elders, the elderly and fragile people that also do not have a voice... BUT, that is where I as a chap in the opposition, will always do my bit.

Sandra, there were many many signs, from steaing food to injuries, but the lack of inter departmental communication left each incident isolated, which is what I belive the report that followed streesed should be revised. Problem is in this case it was there, and still social services time after time deemed the situation safe. Thats the issue....

Consideration needs to be given as to wether employed staff are experienced enough (not just trained) to identify abuse.
also are the different agencies communicating with each other as they should be.

I did the same course several months ago, and was appalled, that despite new procedures being put in place, exactly the same mistakes with the BabyP incident.

I am also appalled that the "blame game" is now being played out too. Stop blaming each other, work together and NEVER let this happen again. How many defenceless youngsters have to go through so much abuse, neglect and death before something "REALLY" gets done to prevent it happening again?

I was led to believe that after the death of Victoria Climbie, all concerned parties had to talk to each other to prevent this happening again. I am so saddened at this.

I'm lucky (if thats a fortunate way of putting it) to be aware of this, even with children, the elderly and mentally vulnerable to have done (and continue to do so) courses workshops and training. While that doesn't make me an expert, it does open your eyes that it does happen, and is more widespread than you might think. We actively supported elderly abuse day (an unfortunate description, but thats how it was described ) in September and the stories you hear range from the 'subtle' to the extreme. Unfortunately these cases are often 'ignored' or 'forgotten' by the relevent agencies far to often.
Take the recent Wirral case of an elderly adult living alone in a house. No heating. No electricity. Unable to remove rubbish so the house begins to fill u withtrash and rotting food etc. Sounds familiar? Now the good bit....

The gas/electric meter reader called round and was let in. He saw the state of the place, was worried about no electricity and heating etc, and contacted the nearest social service. Their answer...?

"What makes YOU an expert in welfare? Have you got a certificate?". Obviously he was apalled and took it further (Front Page news in fact, locally).

Oh yes. Makes you feel all warm inside doesn't it? Imagine yourself in 20 odd years time when todays generation (yes, THAT one!) are the ones looking after you.

Want to join me on the edge of the cliff, anyone?
