OK, you knew this would eventually come from me, now that I am sorted for wired home internet, I'd now like to look at going wireless, but wouldn't know where to start.

Can you please give some, in fact, ANY advice on how/what we need to do to achieve this.

Also, we usually have a printer hooked up to the laptop, and perhaps I am having a senior moment but how would this work should we decide to go with wireless?

, in advance to anyone good enough to give me any techie advice

All you need is a wireless capable router, and a wireless card for the PC (Laptops have wireless capability built in as standard but you might have to switch that on).

Basically if it has antennae, its wireless. A Card for the PC can be as little as a tenner - the router about £30 - £100 (or get a second hand one)

Its easier to set up than you think too. A word of advice though - log into the router (in the manual) and change both the username and password - the defaults of most routers are well known and an easy target for hackers.

Also - most routers also have LAN (Wired) ports too, so printer shouldn't be any different than it is now - unless you also get a wireless printer too!

Ahem *cough* I must be really, really dumb today, cos I don't understand half of that....

(Just read it to Craig, and he didn't fully understand either, so thankfully I don't feel quite so stupid!  )

Any chance you could word it for a simpleton please?

Hi, we have a belkin router. To be honest, it was set up within 10 mins. There is a disc that you get with it to run through the PC and then do the same with any laptops you want to run off it. I have the router downstairs and the `pen` plugged in to the pc upstairs. If I can do it following their instructions, anyone can!

no its the same as far as you are concerned - it only changes when it gets to your phone line. All ISPs work the same process via phone lines.

But if you are on Cable (Virginmedia etc) then its a slighty different box. They should provide the correct router anyway.

Ask your provider -  they will probably supply (and possibly set up for a charge) a suitable router for you. If you ask nicely you might even get it free.

That box all your wires go into from your phone line, then connect to your PC? thats the router.

wireless ones has no wires. They has little aerials

As Lego said, you'll get a CD which should install and setup the router. If the ISP provides it they should et up for you too

Do you have to have a PC as well as a laptop to go wireless????  God I'm sounding thick, but I'd rather sound thick and get it right than pretend I understand and get it wrong!!!!

Nope. Being wireless you can add as little or as many PCs as you like. With wired, any more than 4 and you have to tart buying hubs for extra connections. My wireless connects 2 PCs, a laptop, a media player, ipod, 2 phones and my friends wireless gadgets when they come along. Its all about flexibility!

Should be OK - Just check the laptop has wireless - if its recent it should have. Thats all you need. Just get yourself a wireless router (they have wired ports too).
