So, we have a couple of people over on e-bay selling stuff. One clown is selling some of my original ,photographs!! and another for £20.00 a South Africa DVD.. This really gets my back up, and as someone that has never ever ripped of or made any money from a fan, to see, stuff like this for sale, just pisses me of like big time.
If any of you are registrered with e-bay, then send them note asking first why they are ripping of fans, and also to why they are ripping of my own stuff, that has never been put out to make money.
Feel free to include my name!

Right, rolling up my sleeves, all being wel both items, have now been removed. Should you see any blatent pirate stuff on e-bay, then lets deal with it.
I have no problem with people doing trades etc, but not blatent pirate, ripping off etc, this is just not right.

I know lots of the OMD community trade on Ebuy, but the place still feels like a den of vipers to me, IMO. Some of its members semm to see nothing but currency signs wherever they go, whatever they see - one of the worst traits of human nature, IMO.

It kills the very nature of what these forums and its genuine fans are all about. I have loads of stuff, either my own collections, or stuff passed on from other fans, and even fans from this very forum. I'd hate to think that genuine people would simply not want to share just for the love of it just because some 'looters' take stuff under the pretence simply to make a quick buck.
Good on you Neil for reporting them, I know you put loads of work into these sites and the stuff you have already to share with fans is appreciated, I'm sure, by the majority. It must be a sickener to see your trust abused like that.
Make sure to name and shame Neil, we can all report them next time!
Posted by: NeilT, August 21, 2005, 7:46pm; Reply: 7
Well, lets just say I "dealt" with the individuals on a personal level, and they pulled of the stuff, as soon as I got in touch, I think it is a case lf letting the people doing this for a profit, to know, that some of us "care" about OMD fans, and aint in the business to make a quick bob out of them.
So those that do keep an eye on e-bay, do reoprt things here.

Well done Neil - I remember some of my pics being used on something that was sold on ebay without my permission and I wasn't very happy. Glad you've done something about it.

Yup.. as I have said, I aint got a problem with anyone useing any of my stuff, and if they give a credit, good, that is a bonus.. but not to make money.. nahhh I just am not into that.

Damm... sshhhhhhhhh, no one is meant to know about this ;)
Well, one of the items has now be removed, and one is left on line, a pirate DVD of Crush the movie. I have now reported this to ebay, and suggest that any one with a ebay account should do the same.
The item that has been removed was by the same seller that was trying to sell some of my photographs, when this thread started, seems like a nice guy ;D Here is an e-mail he has sent to me ;D

If only I had a list of the "promo" items that apparently exist (but in fact don't) I could fill up a whole new Discography.
BTW threatening behaviour from eBay users is (guess what) against eBay's rules! Time to report him again methinks....

I aint reported this actual guy as he has *so far* removed 2 items that I have requested to be removed :) but do keep an eye on ebay, as he must be a full time ripper offer, as this is 2 pirate items in 2 weeks!

I am really shocked by all this. I have never got on ebay -don't really understand it - but it makes me really really mad to think how some guy could rip off all the good stuff that omd fans have so generously shared with everyone.
Like I have said before, i have been overwhelmed by the kindness of the true omd fans who post on these forums. Perhaps it is just the case of the best band in the world having the best fans in the world?
This ebay business though - wasn't that the site that bowed to Bob Geldof's wish to remove Live Aid tickets? So far as I could see, there was nothing wrong with selling the tickets yet Ebay bowed to him. Yet here they are allowing a blatant fraudulent trade of omd stuff......words fail me

Ebay does have its good points though.... I have got hold of some (genuine) OMD Rarities from there for some real bargain prices.
Its a shame you also get crap like this too, but thats life I suppose.
The good thing here (as opposed to the 'Loot' or smal Ads is that they can be told off (politely I hope Neil!!) and have the ad removed which will hopefully cost them money, and will eventually help to deter them.

::) i tried selling my car on e-bay...never heard a dicky bird......but e-bay are bombarding me with e-mails for a-z. :-/..i can see the attraction of e-bay though...but the thing is..so can all the crooks of the day.

There were more eBay antics recently when I think the same guy was selling more hooky OMD gear (and using some of my artwork to boot) but I think eBay pulled the auction before it ended.
However, what he's doing now is flagging up genuine OMD items but adding "OTHER ULTRA RARE OMD MATERIAL AVAILABLE ALSO" to the text. So I suspect he'll try and sell all the things he couldn't move on eBay to fans behind the scenes.
Posted by: Elfi, October 12, 2005, 10:50am; Reply: 36
there have always been, and always will be people willing to rip people off......its a shame but they will always find ways around things.
at least there are people like you keeping your eyes open....(re- e-bay),but there are so many unsuspecting people who get duped.

i think most of us are experienced enough to know an OMD bootleg when we see one, but if there's something on offer that we've been after for ages (eg, the SA gig), then i reckon in all honesty we'd probably be interested in it and keen to get a copy. all it depends on is the cost. we know we're being ripped off, BUT...

Across on the Ultravox forum we sometimes have CD or DVD threads where someone creates a master and sends it to someone who copies it and forwards it on to the next person, and so on...
I like this method of passing material out (for commercially non-available material only) as the costs are kept down and you hopefully stop a few more people being fooled into paying big prices for this kind of thing.
Posted by: NeilT, January 13, 2006, 7:44pm; Reply: 42
Yup this sort of thing is fine, untill some muppet wants to profit from it by selling on e-bay, this is whay I do not trade aften at all now days,
Posted by: Si_W, January 14, 2006, 4:32pm; Reply: 43
Somebody will undoubtedly see pound signs, but the more people's hands this material gets to, hopefully the less of a market there is for it...
Posted by: corky100, January 16, 2006, 10:50pm; Reply: 44
Looking across Ebay though it seems there is stil a big market for OMD, and the bootlegs are still there unfortunately, especially the SA gig and now the Sheffield one is there too.

The only way you could take care of this is to release live albums for every concert that was ever recorded - and also release DVD's of every filmed concert, TV show etc. Not very practical - or likely.
Someone has asked if its possible to trade bootleg gigs on the OMD Forum and after a chat with Andy we're going to see how that goes. The only provisio is that no money changes hands.

I'm all for that. I have a fair few concerts here and although its nowhere near as many as say Neil or PB May have, I would have no problem sharing for free if they were wanted.
I saw one idea on a site that the members posted what they had to offer, and the people who wanted them simply posted out a CD-R with return postage, and once the disc was done it was just posted back. saves poeple some cost, and no money changes habds at all. Just A suggestion.

I do not mind hosting any concerts, have the web space ;) etc I could do it all as MP3 so people can download, but there is always a muppet that will take the pi$$
If you have any concerts, that you think people would like to listen to, I can put them up on the Motion And Heart site for all to hear.

I can passowrd protect a directory easy enough, thats very easy to do, but I have had "friends" in the past, that I have done for, and they have "promised" it would be for there own use only, but later they do a copy for a friend, and that friend does a copy, and then a few years later it ends up on ebay or the likes.
This is why all of the concerts and video that I have online, is in flash, it aint so easy to rip. Have you seen my live audio section with concerts etc?

What size of space are we looking at Neil? I only ask as people might want to keep files from lossless sources in flac format.

Just to update on this item....
Its an hour long interview with Andy, covering the story behind how OMD Started, going through each of the singles and Albums in turn and a quick story about each, with some interesting info. Unfornately its also overdubbed by some french bloke translating which does detract and make listening difficult sometimes but still its interesting listening.
One oddity is an intro to Enola Gay I never heard before, quite simple and very 'electricity' sounding in style. Though I havent listened to it properly as such yet, I certainly will do soon as I have an hour to spare.
I could up some of this if its possible (and allowed) as it was a promo and never officially released i beleive. Must be scarce as I seen it going for over £100 in some places so a worthwile addition to my collection anyways!
Posted by: NeilT, January 26, 2006, 1:29am; Reply: 69
as a promo, it can be a little risky putting links in a public place ;) but if you wanted a private area where you can share with friends, then this would be OK, and if you need space etc, just let me know.
Posted by: corky100, January 26, 2006, 2:36am; Reply: 70
yes Neil, I was concerned about that too, so to be safe I could upload to FTP and keep the bitrate low enough to be useless for commercial use while still being audible for community enjoyment.
Send me a PM with the info and I'll get this up soon as i can..

Pretty incredible this one - some character is selling a whole whack of OMD albums on MP3'd CD. Item no. is 4830531671 (he's also nicked a pic from the OMD site to boot).
I've reported the listing to eBay. I'm also making sure both Andy and Virgin are aware of this.
eBay have decided to really bury the form for complaints of these nature, but you can find it here:
Violations report form. If you have 5 mins, please fire off a note to eBay yourself as it may help.
Neil - Please let me know if the seller's name is familar to you.

Please Note :- This disc is in MP3 format and will not play on ordinary cd players - will work on PC and MP3 compatible DVD players and it's sole purpose is for back up.
It is the buyers responsibility to own or possess the original recordings.Should this disc contain any albums that are not owned by the buyer then it is their responsibility to destroy or remove such albums within 24 hours of receipt to abide by copyright laws.
Not come across this chap before, but as predicted you will always get some muppet doing this. I have considered doing a name and shame forum.. what do you think?

This is just taking the piss. Although it would be a huge job Ebay need some way of screening/approving stuff that falls into certain categories before it's listed. My complaint is on its way.

Unfortunately, that auction went to completion and eBay didn't remove it. I only noticed it last night mind.
The other things he's selling all have suspiciously low opening bids too.
I do want this guy's details so I can at least ban him from the OMD Forum (if he's on there) and block him from buying stuff via the website.

I totally agree. These sort of people are very selfish and are out to make a fast buck, no matter who they stamp on during the process. So go for it Neil as far as I'm concerned.

I've always wanted an OMD DVD myself, but such a thing hasn't been officially released yet. Anyway, eBay is full of users who burn footage onto DVDs and sell them to make money. But by doing so, they are going against copyright laws. I ended up paying £10 for a Nik Kershaw DVD that was a friggin' bootleg.

You should report the seller!!
I have no problem with people converting things to DVD or CD, I have enough stuff done here, but then to sell it for profit, well, that is just wrong, as simple as that, just wrong...

Before Christmas, I had trouble getting the toy that my daughter wanted, so had a look at eBay. People were selling the toys for double of more the cost. I decided against being ripped off and good old Tescos came up with the goods at a discount well before Christmas. eBay plays on our weaknesses and fears - be strong! Sorry about the pirated pics, Neil.

Ebay can be a great tool if you know how to use it and spot the scams....
I hear someone paid about £350 recently for a scarce XBOX 360, and was sent a photo of one instead, as quoted in the unseen small print on the listing. Take care and you can get some great stuff there.
But there are too many wanting to rob you of your cash by scamming and decieving you. Ue the facilities to report these people if you become a victim, and get to know your rights should you fall foul. But with a little vigilance you will be fine. I'm not pro-Ebay, but just have good experiences and some real bargains.

Sadly, Corky, that kind of thing is all too prevalent. I personally would never use eBay for anything over about £40-£50. That sum is easier to write off as a loss that £350 (ouch...).

I haven't had any really bad experiences (except for one over 99p!) just to say it has its place.
I may be in a position soon to be able to 'educate' some people about how to use Ebay and what pitfalls to look out for, and how to spot fakes, dodgy stuff and little scams and tricks to remove you from your money.
I 'll hopefully be taking the Ebay Diploma at College soon, and will be able to transfer the knowledge i already have, along with any extra bits I pick up, to other people who are new, or not aware, if they are willing to take on a short course where i work. We already get many people asking about it and so many people i see are very blind to the possibility of being scammed. Hopfully this will happen if the funding holds up and the trustees give the OK.
It'd be nice to do my part, and I'll encourage anyone who takes it up to report non genuine articles.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but on a simular note, I have noticed that certain clips of OMD are taken from sites like this (not sure if this one has been affected) and end up appearing on YouTube. I know for certain that when looking for TV-related stuff, a simular problem can be found there, with no regards for the where they got the clip from or who was responsible for making it in the first place.

I have soooooo, much of my stuff ripped, you would not believe it... Dont mind, if there is the odd thank you. But to do all of the converting, transfers etc, does take up so much time... hence why I do not share half as much of my stuff as I once did.

Far better to make it available to stream from the website......
At least on YouTube there isn't much profit to be made off someone else's back.....
