I was never into Billy Bragg (though a great songwriter), Story of the Blues - fantastic (took me ages to find a download of it though). But fav record of the 80s is a toss-up between :

Tears for Fears - MAD WORLD. (The new version made me cringe.)

and

Yazoo - NOBODYS DIARY

I haven't heared of those songs Steph

Moonlight Shadow and Family Man were also top Oldfield tunes!

And as Fiction factory were the first band I saw live (support for OMD in 84 at Manchester Apollo) 'Feels like Heaven' also holds a special place.

I was a big fan of Kajagoogoo and have their albums and singles.  Although they could be classed and bland and poppy I like them!

I jokingly dedicated that record to my ex-wife (whilst we were still married) once. It didn't go down too well with her. Not long afterwards we divorced.

I do deeply regret that joke, but my marriage was as good as over at the time anyway.

At least if you have a bad separation, you can play it.
I still have a folder with mp3:s that I played when I was angry at one of my ex:es.
It had tracks like:

Hole In My Head by Dixie Chicks (I love the phrase "I need you like a hole in my head"
I Never Loved You Anyway by the Corrs
To Think I Used To Love You by Uncle Kracker
Woman In The Wall by The Beautiful South
I'll Sail This Ship Alone also by The Beautiful South
As If by Blaque

It was the easy way to let my anger surface without hitting anyone :)

I'm not that fond of 'too late' for that reason :D Not that I ever dance. Neil knows that....

Some songs I'd laike to dedicate to the ex.......off topic I know but still in the vein of things :D

My baby is a headf**k by the Wildhearts
She Hates me by Puddle of Mudd
Why do you try so hard to Hate Me by Electric Soft Parade

amongst others.....;D

I can't say Kajagoogoo ever stoked my fire, but 'too shy' is bearable looking back, Eurythmics were a fine band, Madness were excellent, and the Jam, well, pure class. Down in a tubestation at Midnight is a timeless classic, and still very true today, if you know the words.

Is it true that Limahl worked at the Mr. Andrew Hairotorium? :D

I got into The Smiths / Morrissey towards the end of the 80s. Some fine song-writing there. I'm hoping to sing some when/if I next perform at the music club - if I can get some sheet music.

It's easier to own them on DVD, that way you can watch them in one giant sitting ;D

Having gone through Buffy, Angel and all Star Trek series plus a number of other TV-series on DVD, I've now bought an old series I watched when I was little, private Turpin. Funny thing I still remember it even though it must have been early eighties when I watched it. Still waiting for Catweazle to be sent.

Only problem with having so many DVDs is where to put them ;)

All the books.

Most of the Buffy`s on DVD and the books.

She`s started recording the Angel`s,so I don`t mind that. ;)

Lots of good songs mentioned.

Apart from those already listed, here are a few of my favourites:
Down Under by Men At Work
Smooth Operator by Sade
Spring Fever by Mezzoforte

I could go on forever ;)

Know what you mean! "Down Under" is a great song, for one. The odd thing is, there was so much Cr*p in the charts at the time, it's only looking back you think yes, there were some great songs out then...  ;D

I think that was Milli Vanilli, not SP.

I have a big list of bands I like so heres some of them, OMD (they come on top), Madness, Kate Bush, Altered Images, Dead or Alive, Bananarama, Mike Oldfield, Eurythmics, Kylie Minogue, one song from The Hooters, ABBA, Dire Straits, The Police, Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Big Country (a good Scottish band), Kraftwerk, Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, Adam & The Ants, Queen and Roxette. Now thats just some of them, but I can't remember the rest

Sorry about the big list, but to cut a long story short, that song was done by Spandau Ballet, like alot of 80's bands (but they can't come above my favourite band that I play every night, thats right OMD) and 80's songs, but I can't remember most of them

Yes they did a UK television show with OMD in 1980.
The band got interested in using synths after they saw OMD playing them.

And look what happened: 1983 Eliminator and 1985 Afterburner were a mix of muddy Texan rock and spacey synths.
Brilliant albums which I would like to recommand, especially 1983 Eliminator.

There was a programme on about Freddy Mercury sometime last week I think and I missed it.......I wanted to see it, but I had some housework to do ::)

I quite like Big Country, the scottish band, I wonder what happened to them. They did some great songs, like, In a Big Country and Fields of Fire. I really don't know what happened to them and I wonder they are abck together, to do some concerts

my favorite rock band of all time was BIG COUNTRY & as stuart adamson committed suicide because of his long time troubles with alcoholism already almost 5 years ago by now , i was really shocked  ... & i've listened to one of my favorite ballads of bc called "troubled man" ( what a prophetic song that was !  :( ) over & over again @ that time !   :'(

here are the lyrics to that song :

"Troubled Man" by Big Country

Lyrics and music written by Stuart Adamson ( R. i. P. )

Once my dreams came true
Once but not for me
I told them all to you
But dreams are never clear

If I must be alone
Then let it be forever
For it takes a troubled man
To know the freedom of his fear

No longer will I look
For what can never happen
No deeper can I long
For what I know is dear

If I must live my life
In darkness and in shadow
For it takes a troubled man
To know the freedom of his fear

If words could fade away
And strangers go unanswered
Let friendships all be gone
And no acquaintance near

For I would rather die
Than love you for this moment
For it takes a troubled man
To know the freedom of his fear

I think Iím in trouble
Once again you come to me
I think Iím in trouble
Take this troubled man from me ...

it's indeed a lil' rarity , because it was only the b-side of their - imho , of course ! - worst single ever called "heart of the world" from 1990 - iirc ...
not many people - not even all bc fans !  :B - know this wonderful , but also very sad song , which is indeed a shame , as it's one of the best rock ballads ever written - also imho , of course !

New Order - Ceremony

yeah ... that's a really good choice , as it also marks the end of joy division ( because this songs was actually still written together with ian curtis ) & the beginning of ( the ) new order ( because it was their very 1st single ) !

in my all time favorite list of great 80s songs there's one song i currently like to listen to a lot again ... & it's "sleepwalk" by ultravox , which was their very 1st single with midge ure as the new lead singer & guitarist then !  8)

but i simply could pick jus' one song - no matter from which band , sorry !  :B

We could listen not to many bands here (especially in early 80s)- access wasn't allowed and it was really very difficult to get cassettes from abroad. :-/

I liked PET SHOP BOYS very much.

A small story.
We- girls, were in love with MODERN TALKING. We knew SHERY, SHERY LADY (sorry, spelling :B) by heart and sung it very often. But then we found out, that song was ABOUT A DOG!!! :o No word about MODERN TALKING more!(naughty) Big love was over.

I don't usually have a favourite song - because there are just too many. However, I shall cite Visage's 'Fade to Grey' as the definitive electronic piece of the decade, that operned the door for all the other (wave of electronic artists to follow.) Also, Midge Ure (a founder member of Visage) and his main line band - Ultravox's 'Passionate Reply' a brilliant lyrical / musical blend, as electroinic and atmospehric as you can get - underpinned by the guitar sound / playing of Midge...

Depeche Mode is also one of my all time favorite bands. Bit of trivia here. By the end of the 1980's Depeche Mode had the most top fourty hits for a band who never had a number one single (in the UK), making them the most successful British Band of the decade. Second was the Stranglers (still together - different line up) with 28 (top forty hits in the UK) from 1977 - 1990. ;)

It's too hard to have a single favourite - BUT if I had to pin one down to sum up the 80s I'd probably say Blue Monday by New Order!

It's not (musically) a great song really, but it always reminds me of 1983: my first serious girlfriend, going to a youth club in Kirkby-in-Ashfield on Friday nights, leaving school, a long hot summer.

Great, carefree times......

By the way, does anyone else remember these obscure little gems?

The safety dance - Men without hats
The last film - Kissing the pink
Just got lucky - The Jo-Boxers
Don't tell me - Blancmange
King in a catholic style - China crisis
No-one driving - John Foxx
Dancing tight - Galaxy

These ones aren't by any means favourites, but they're pretty worthy. I'm listening to most of them at the mo!

ok, i'm going to start with Lament by Ultravox. I saw them live in Leicester on their final tour and they were amazing. Lament just seemed to stand out from the rest - so atmospheric and sort of spooky as well, a real spine tingler.

Just had quick look through this thread ... impossible to answer of course, especially without mentioning an OMD track ...but why is it that no-one ever mentions The Human League!?

I'll have to put one in for them and say : Love Action (I Believe in Love)

..obviously I will have changed my mind by tomorrow ....  ;)

more Human League phew..thank goodness for that! ... Being Boiled is technically 70s, although if you refer to the 'Travelogue' version (much better IMHO) then OK..it's 80's!!   ;)

then again it depends what you mean by '80s band' I suppose  :B
